Discover one of the most exciting regions for birding in South Africa, the Soutpansberg


Birding South AfricaWith over 540 recorded bird species, and the majority residents, the Soutpansberg Mountains makes for an all year round birding paradise. Mashovhela Lodge is registered with Birlife South Africa and is categorized as Birder Friendly.

Verreaux's (Black) Eagles nest in sight of the lodge, whilst other raptors such as Bateleurs, Buzzards and Giant Eagle Owls sore above.

Black-fronted Bush-Shrike, Blue-spotted Wood-Dove, Golden-backed Pytelia, Cape Vulture, 2 subspecies of Peregrine Falcon, Black Stork and the Bat Hawk, all on South Africa's Red Data bird species list, occur in the area.

Lesser found species tend to be easier to see in this area, these include the Pink-throated Twinspot, Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher, Narina Trogon, Purple-crested Lourie and flocks of exquisite Crested Guineafowl.

All our guides have a good birding knowledge, however a specialist bird guide (registered with Birdlife South Africa) can be orgainised who will not only guide you around our reserve, but other birding sites in the Soutpansberg Mountains, Louis Trichardt and Venda.
